Early in the morning
or late at night
Sometimes
I either don’t have them yet
or I’ve used enough of them for the day
Sometimes you’ll use them to break in—
because there’s a relevant story here and
you’ve had a similar experience and
you know someone with that condition and
your friend just went there and
your job also sucks and—
Sometimes they’ll coat them lightly in venom
and throw them around in a public space
as if there are no other ears around
that could possibly become infected
Sometimes they’re hushed,
slipped into a cupping hand,
only for you to receive
Sometimes they split at an intersection
Two different destinations between two people
So what seems like a conversation
is actually a collision
Sometimes it’s best to set them free—
they’re lining up behind your tongue after all—
and sometimes you must be the reverse bouncer
and check IDs before you let them out
